Fairmont School District 89 Families,

Considering the warm weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday, here is information about the measures we are taking to ensure the well-being of your student(s). For the Heat Advisory Monday, heat index values around 105 are expected. For the Excessive Heat Watch on Tuesday, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 110 to 115 are possible.

Limiting Time Outdoors: We are closely monitoring temperatures (both actual and feels-like) and adjusting activities accordingly.  We will minimize the time students spend outdoors during peak heat hours.

  • Recess and physical education classes will remain indoors when temperatures (real and feels-like) rise above 90 degrees.

Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial in hot weather. We strongly encourage everyone to bring spill-proof water bottles to school.

  • Students will be offered opportunities to fill or refill their water bottles as needed.

  • Students will be encouraged to fill their bottles before walking home in the afternoon.

Clothing: Students should wear comfortable, breathable, lightweight attire, avoiding dark colors; however, their clothes should still comply with the dress code.

Transportation: If possible, parents should consider driving students to and from school to avoid time on a bus or walking/biking outdoors.

  • Students walking or riding a bike home are encouraged to bring water and travel at a non-strenuous pace.

Know the Signs: Heat-related illness can present in many ways, and often, symptoms are similar to those of other conditions. Please reference this resource on symptoms and how to handle illness when overheating occurs.

Cooling Centers: There are many areas where residents can go to stay cool when they don’t have air conditioning at home. Please feel free to use and share these resources.

Please take care; safety is always our top priority! Please contact the school's main office if you have any questions or concerns.
